Weather and recent news reports

Hi All,

Just about to book a once in a lifetime trip to Sri Lanka (south west beaches) for August and read a few different weather reports. A bit of rain generally wont scare me off but just wondering if anyone had any experience of the weather at this time of the year.

Also, there was a recent story in the press - just wanted to check what the situation was like over there. Some websites tend to verge on the side of caution which is useful (to an extent) but enough to frighten the life out of you.

Any Sri Lanka experts that could offer any advice???

Hi there...

I was in Lanka for all of August lat year (south west) and i can tell you that the weather was really nice, just the odd little shower on one or two afternoons.

Safety?, well down in south west regions you have nothing at all to worry about, any problems ';could'; be in areas north of Colombo, although even this recently has been very few and far between, so again nothing for you to worry about, yes, you could well be stopped and asked to produce some sort of ID, but nothing other than this.

Regards

Dave

Looking forward to next visit at end of March !

Weather and recent news reports

Hi,

Usually August weather is quite nice. Sunny mornings. Clouds building up in the afternoon and that usually ends up in a heavy thundershower late afternoon or in the evening. But he weather has been a bit unpredictable over last couple of years. Locals blame the tsunami, but I tend to believe it%26#39;s due to the global heating. I have been to Sri Lanka a couple of times in August and the rain has never obstructed what I wanted to do. I hope to go back in July-August this year to watch the perahera in Kandy and possibly some cricket too.

I assume the press story was on the security situation. The southwest has never been affected by the ongoing ethnic conflict. Tourist have never been directly targeted in Sri Lanka. Avoid going to the north and east of the country, and to a certain degree avoid Colombo city. Sri Lanka more safe than the Spanish Costas and the beach resorts in Turkey. Usual caution is to stay clear of government buildings, military camps and large gatherings. I have just come back from my 43rd holidays in Sri Lanka over 30 years. This time I stayed 10 weeks, and I did feel worried for one second. I go back for another 7-8 weeks in the middle of March.
