Hi there.....

Sri Lanka is very similar to the 2 countries you have mentioned, with the people just as poor too, i have been to Cuba and can make this comparrison.

Toiletries/make up for the ladies will always be VERY gratefully recieved as these items are very expensive for them to buy , it is something i always take for the girls working at hotels i go to in Sri Lanka and they are very happy and delighted too.

I usually go ';shopping'; on E-Bay for bulk lots, excellent value too !

One thing people usually overlook, when at the end of your holiday you have items like part finished shower gels, shampoos, t shirts, flip flops ect ect, please don%26#39;t throw them away OR take them home, simply give them as a gift, again not much to us, but to the recievers it would mean a great deal.

Regards

Dave

If you are talking about giving small gifts to the staff, bear in mind that most of them seem to be male, not female. Everyone is going to give a different answer to this one, but the Sri Lankan friend that we always travel with, tends to tip the staff with cigarettes and they always seem more than happy with this.

We tip with cash ... but only if the tip is deserved. Some hotels have a tip box which is by far the nicest way of doing it because every member of staff gets a share, not just the one carrying your bag to and from the room, and the room boy. I always feel sorry for the ladies sweeping the leaves and the gardeners, etc. because they often miss out ...
