One day trips

Many useful comments here i see.

We are travelling to Club Hotel Dolphin for 14 days for our honeymoon in early may, 09.

What tours ant excursions from this hotel can we get without staying overnight not i our hotel.

As we would prefere early leaving and coming back late rather than staying in other hotels.

Hmmm... there are some but it%26#39;s REALLY quite limited. E.g. Sigiriya Rock and wildlife safaris are basically off-limits as these are advised against or impossible in the middle of the day, and a 4+ hours ride from Negombo.

But a few things which are possible:

* Halfday: boat trip in the Dutch canals towards the north, and visiting the larger local churches and temples.

* Full-day, with decent departure and return times: Anuradhapura and Mihintale sacred cities, Pinawela elephant orphanage, Colombo for shopping.

* Full-day, with quite extreme departure/return times. That means e.g. leaving 4-5 AM and/or returning after 9 PM. Kandy town combined with Pinawela, and Dambulla cave temple combined with (yes) Sigiriya Rock. For the latter if you leave at 5-5:30 AM you could arrive by 10 AM and then the heat is just tolerable, one hour later it is not.

Note that making a 2-day trip is cheaper than separate trips if the attractions are nearby. E.g. Anuradhapura and Kandy together in a 2-3 day trip is cheaper than separate trips; what you spend extra on another hotel (maybe Rs 2,000 for a decent 2-star) you gain by not having to drive the same roads twice. After all from coast to the nearest inland attraction is at least 100 km --%26gt; Rs 8,000 return!
