Advise on Galle Hotel with little planning!

Hello,

I just arrived to Colombo yesterday and quickly realized that I need to get moving out of the city if I want to see nature!

Galle looks like a great place to check out. I am wondering on recommendations of best place to stay for a good price during this season.

I%26#39;m traveling alone, and very light - probably taking a train down there. Want to check out the beach. Also, is there a way to rent a surf board? Looks like there%26#39;s some nice places to surf. Maybe a hotel in Mirissa?

And lastly, when you get on a tuk tuk, do they generally speak english, and how hard will it be for me to get to specific locations?

Thanks!!!

Hi there,

Unawatuna is the place to be. 4-5 km from Galle, reasonable beach and PLENTY of budget acco and independent restaurants. Galle town has no beach and not much budget acco.

Train to Galle and then bus to U%26#39;tuna; the train also reaches U%26#39;tuna after a 20-30 min wait (turn the locomotive) but that%26#39;s only town centre which is far from the beach, bus is better.

Tuktuk drivers know enough English, in Colombo and elsewhere. You%26#39;d still need a printed/written address of the location, with that they can ask around when needed as understanding your pronuncation of it is not always easy for them.

All the best,

HI,

I agree with Erik regarding looking for a place outside of Galle, not in the city. In my opinion, Galle is worth a day trip, not somewhere to stay.

If you want surf, then Unawatuna isn%26#39;t for you. The beach there is reef proteced so no surf.

Check, out the southern beach at Hikkaduwa, there%26#39;s a surf spot the locals use at Narigama about 1 mile south of town, plenty of guest houses around there overlooking the beach and if you wanted a reasonable hotel, then Sunils, Beach Hotel, Narigama is Ok.

Mirissa has plenty of surfers towards the western end of the beach. Also plenty of guest houses. One that I particularly like is the

Mirissa beach Inn.

Don%26#39;t know about board hire. You%26#39;re more likely to finfd that in Hikkaduwa.

Rod.

Okay, good addition about there being more to the eye than solely Unawatuna. But disagree that U%26#39;tuna has no surf options. It definitely has, as the coral reef shielding the bay is only about 150 meters from the beach and surfers simply walk (or swim) to that place and start the fun there. Have seen loads of them during my regular visits.

E.g. Surf City guesthouse, which actually also does websurfing ;-), thrives on these people.

All the best again,
