hi staying at the fortress in feb can anyone recomend any trips or local spas for massage crash out time lol
the fortress
Hi Tony,
Spas are mainly present at luxury hotels in Lanka. So next to the Fortress%26#39; own one there%26#39;s within an hours drive also Lighthouse (Galle), Amangalla (Galle) and Amanwela (nr. Tangalle) hotel spas.
Trips: basically same as what you will find when using the search term %26#39;excursions%26#39; in the forum. However Elephant Orphanage, Kandy and Cultural Triangle must be done as multi-day trips, whilst an Udu Walawe jeep safari is an easy halfday trip from Fortress - this due to its location which is slightly out from the most popular southwest coast areas.
All the best,

Hi Tony,
From Koggala where The Fortress is to Uda-walawa national park is about 140 kms. So the drive would be around 4 hours each way. Best is to leave Koggala in the morning, do the afternoon safari in Uda-walawa and sleep over night in Embilipitiya and return the next day. When you do a safari, it is best either early in the morning or late afternoon. Morning safaris are good for bird watching while afternoon is best for animals.
Regards,
Frank.
Hmmm... calculations calculations.... Good points from Frank about morning vs. afternoon safari. The trip Koggala - UW park however in the dark is 2.5 hours at most; the roads are good and traffic is very limited then. (Distance according to my table around 110-120 km but even these are not very accurate in Lanka.) So COULD still do it as day trip IMHO, either leaving Koggala at 3:30 AM or returning at 9 PM - but overnight is always more relaxed indeed.
All the best,

The Fortress has its own spa/massage set-up (the manager was Australian, when we were there, which we found odd in Sri Lanka, when thousands of locals are trained in the ancient arts)
