Hi Richard

Have just returned after 3 glorious weeks in Sri Lanka. I cannot say that we noticed any significant change in the prices of food from a year ago.

The biggest difference, as always, is in the price of food and drink at tourist hotels and restaurants, compared to local places, and that has always been the case. For example: buy a cup of Nescafe in a hotel geared for western tourists and you are looking at Rs150 or more ... the same thing in a perfectly nice local restaurant in the centre of Kandy town cost us Rs25.

We enjoyed eating at local places whenever we could .. the food was delicious and hygienically prepared and cost us just pence. Try the delicious rottis and patties that are served everywhere .. they will cost you about Rs30 each. But if you do want to eat in tourist places, you are looking at main courses costing from an average of Rs350 - Rs700 and often have additional service charges and taxes added on. The best priced meals are usually the local rice and curry dishes.

Hi Richard

In ';Real Terms'; all prices have actually gone UP by at least 25% on this time last year, not really because of prices in Sri Lanka, but of course you will be getting much less Rupees for your Pound than you did last year, currently around 160 Rupees to a Pound.

All alcohol prices there have risen quite sharply due to extra taxes by the SL government, by the time hotels have added ';thier'; bit it would be around 30% more.

Regards

Dave
