We are going to Sri Lanka in December and would like to know the best use of mobile phones. We are on contract with orange when I asked them the cost of using the mobile in SL they text back the amount 拢1.75 per minute to call from SL to UK, 拢1.00 per minute to receive and 50p per text. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative. Any help appreciated.
Thanks Jayne

Hi Jayne,
Can be done LOTS cheaper. Make sure your mobile is Simlock-free. A local SIM costs around Rs 500 and then from the prepaid top-up cards calls to UK are as low as Rs 10/minute (6 pennies). Being called is free for you at least with some prepaid packages (others charge Rs 1-2/minute or so for incoming) and would be maybe 30-40 pence per minute for the UK caller, depending on their operator. Of course the disadvantage is that you need to communicate your temporary Lankan number to the folks at home.
Prepaid operators in Lanka are e.g. Dialog and Tigo, Dialog is most widely used.
All the best,

Hi Jayne
Deffinately as Erik has said use a local sim in your own mobile, saved me countless pounds every trip doing it this way, the connection is valid for 12 months after you last top it up, so if comig back down within that time you can use it agin...
Dialog around the best for overall performance/coverage....

On duty at Heritance Ahungalla.....
Thanks for the reply, we will be staying at the Dophin when we first arrive, can you buy the sim cards easily and from where and how do you go about registering the sim card? Jayne
Hi again....
Sim cards are ready to go as soon as you buy, so long as bought from from place like a Dialog shop or approved agent, elsewhere maybe not ';live'; for few hours.
BUT you must make sue that your mobile is unlocked and able to take any sim card !

Hi
Please do anyone know if any mobile phone can be used for a sri lanka sim card
Yours
Ian
Hi Ian,
Basically it does, as GSM is GSM all over the world. BUT the precondition is that you don%26#39;t have any type of SIMlock. If in doubt, first at an UK phone shop try to replace the SIM with a demonstration one of the shop and get/make a brief testcall/text.
All the best,
