political situation in sri lanka

Hi

There might be some minor trouble in Kandy in the coming weeks as the will be elections to the Central Provincial Council.

The troubles are usual in pre- %26amp; post-elections in Sri Lanka and are NOT targeting tourists. They are between rival political parties. So just follow the usual warnings: Stay away from large gatherings.

Hans

P.t. in hot and sunny Lanka (but mornings are quite cool for the last week or so - 22C until around 8-8:30 am)

Hey,

Went there two weeks ago and the place is quiet as chuch mouse, hardly any foreign toruists, nice and peaceful.

cheers

Bano

thanks for the reply,my friend heard about the killings in colombo and mixed it up with kandy,we are going in 6 more weeks cant wait, staying in kalutara, mixed views on the web site but if i dont go i will naver know.nothing ventured nothing gained.

Particularly bearing in mind the FCO advice, for a first time visitor to Sri Lanka, which general direction should I look for a beach holiday. South and south west seems good from the little reading I have done so far?

Yes for sure. Which translates to %26#39;from Marawila (and even Kalpitiya) in the far West to Hambantota in the far south%26#39;, including Negombo/Waikkal of course. All touristy areas and all far from troubles and instability. Best season for those is December to March though all other months, with the possible exception of June and Oct-Nov, usually have good enough weather too.

All the best,

Hi, just got back from Sri Lanka on Sunday, spent 10 days in South West, Ahungalla.

There is a noticeable security clamp down with check points throughout the country, didnt really bother us down South as they are infrequent but you will notice it alot more in and around Columbo due to the problems over the last 2 weeks.

I cant comment on Kandy but i think the general rule of thumb is to be vigilant, Sri Lanka is a huge country and as such it is highly unlikely you will run into any trouble.

My advice would be just be mindful of any political buildings/gatherings and enjoy your hols...

Best

Ben

thanks for that ben, going to a place called kalutara looking forward to it,going 2nd week in feb so it should be ok by then.

Came back from Kandy on 4th January. Calm. Full of pilgrims and security
