confusion re malaria tabs

Travelling in 2 weeks to SLanka. Our Doctor is experiencing a lot of varying information on the best tabs to use for SLanka. Some foreign travel med sites say that chloroquin is not effective. Others say the correct malaria regimen is chloroquin and proguani. Some say that Malerone is effective and others disagree. Anyone got any advice on this?

confusion re malaria tabs

Hi Confused Jody....

Depends VERY much on where you are staying in Sri Lanka as to whether or not you need to take ANY anti malarial tablets at all.

If staying solely at a west coast beach resort for your stay then you do NOT have to take any at all, it is recommended however that if your visiting AND staying overnight at the following places then maybe you should consider taking them.

Dambulla and north of there...

Yala and southern plains....

You should take precautions not to get bitten in the first palce by Malaria carrying mozzies, and cover up AFTER sunset with a good repellent, and wear long sleaves and trousers if outdoors, a good repellent to use is one called AUTAN i use it all the time there and do not get bitten, even last time out in Sri Lanka i stayed 5 nights in Dambulla and did not get bitten once.

Hope this helps

Dave

Hi

To add to Dave%26#39;s reply.

Dengue and malaria was reported from Galewela (about 15 km from Dambulla towards Kurunegala) last week.

Yes I also agree with the above posts. We travel to Sri Lanka and India were it is recomended to take malaria pills. We never have done. We use a good repellent. Its from Boots, Pump spray tropical strength for mosquitos and other biting insects which can carry diseases. On the cost you dont realy need to take the pills. Put on lotion after 16.00 and cover up your body as best you can without getting too over done. We did not get bitten well not me. I did see a scots man in a terrible state due to not putting on this lotion. The local stuff does not work. Going back to the Pills I have seen people in a bad state also with taking them. Being sick, off food and fevers. there are also so many different types. My advice is dont take them and use the spray. Get a mosquito electric unit to plug in for your room also available from boots. Hope this helps. Go and enjoy.

Thanks for the infor on repellants. As we are taking our childre aged 7 and 10 years we have decided to go the route of the anti malarial tabs. Again, as I have said earlier the information on the appropriate malaria regimen is quite contradictory . Just hoping that somebody on the TA would have the correct information on the appropriate tabs.
