my daughter is travelling as a party of 28 mostly under 30%26#39;s to club dolphin in august 09. getting married there early september. Friday 4th september is a poya day so believe the wedding will be either the 2nd or 3rd. have heard good reports about this hotel and first choice holidays will be arranging the wedding package but she wants a bbq on the beach in the evening. does anyone know of a local contact to arrange this. I would love this to be a suprise for them. and would want lights / food/ drink and music.

would any of the locals be able to arrange this for her. the hotel have an a la carte restaurant and will probably accommodate all of us for a wedding feast but she really want a bbq on the beach. ( her dream)

Any reason why Club Dolphin would NOT be able to arrange this BBQ for you too? All beach hotels that I know of can so.

Falling back to a local restaurant/caterer of course is an option but they%26#39;ll have difficulty bringing stuff to the beach; all good access paths to it lead through Dolphin premises. So better first inquire with the hotel and if that really fails come back here to obtain advice about alternative local places. Just make clear to the hotel that this is a separate %26#39;job%26#39; and never is allowed to be mentioned in the papers that daughther and groom get...

thank you for your help - the hotel came up with a price of 60 dollars per head for a bbq when very early enquiries were made and with the exchange rate so poor that could now be quite expensive. I appreciate they will probably have to supply a chef and a ';special menu'; but I think the evening party will be just as important to them as the food. would I offend them by restricting to a budget of say £600 all in and asking for a restricted menu.

a) The price offered by the hotel seems quite absurd, USD 60 is around Rs 6,500. FYI: a buffet dinner in a 5-star tourist hotel in Colombo, Negombo or Kandy would at most be Rs 2,000 including local drinks.

b) So it seems a good idea to ask the hotel what they can offer for a lower budget. And imply between the lines that you feel inclined to ask competing restaurants for quotes if you feel they charge too much.

If the response is not good enough, indeed you%26#39;d be forced to follow that path.

Just to add to Eriks reply, you would have already paid for your dinner that night (as part of your holiday cost), maybe mention this to them too, should automatically give a discount on ANY quoted cost by the hotel.

Agree 100% with Erik on the $60 quote by them, far above what good 5 star hotels in Lanka are charging for dinners, even some fine dining ones !.

Lobster dinner on beach where i usually go would NOT come close to $60 !!!

Even a 5 course Chinese meal in Galadari hotel for 5 people recently was less that that ALL IN for ALL 5 people!!

once again thanks for your help - the original menu offered was very comprehensive with a soup for starters choice of 3/ 4 meats and vegatarian with rice/ potatoes. and a choice of desserts.

but what I think I will do is ask them for a choice of two meats some vegetarian rice/ potatoes and salad and one dessert. as previously mentioned we are all inclusive and have already paid for that nights meal -albeit in the restaurant.

I just want to make sure they can lay on some form of lighting for the beach together with a sound system where if necessary we will bring our own c.d%26#39;s. does anybody have a good email address for the club dolphin.

I was at the hotel Dolphin for my third visit this year. With regard to your beach party I can thourghly recommend Harold and his wife Deepka to organise your party.

The reason I am SO confident is that they organised a beach party for me this November for 130 people.

My husband and I support a local school and we thought it would be a great idea to have the whole school plus teachers and some parents to our beach for a party. They were all transported in local buses hired through Harold. It was a three hour journey to our hotel.

We had a large marquee and a three course meal on the beach with waiters in uniforms !!! The food was fantastic and very reasonable. Tables chairs and tablecloths were all provided.

Harold will also organise firewrks etc... If you want more details please contact me. The price for it all was very cheap !!

All the above was organised by Harold, Deepika and Blackie.....They will make sure you have a party to remember forever.

We are going again this year and I am the party will now be an annual event.

this sounds fantastic -we have narrowed it down to two nights that the wedding will be on - friday is a poya day. Is there nothing harold %26amp; blackie can%26#39;t do they seem to be mentioned eveywhere. Were they permitted to use the beach at the hotel and approx how much would they charge inc fireworks.

Yes we were permitted to hold our big party on the beach right by the hotel (just to left of the hotel beach), so toilets etc were available.

I am not sure re the cost of fireworks but I do know that neither Harold or Blackie will overcharge you.

The marquee, tables and chairs we hired came to about £60 the three course buffet meal including the waiters came to about £3 per head.

I too married out there 3 years ago and all the men had a stag day organised by Harold and Blackie, they went out in a boat fishing, played cricket on a beach with the locals had a barbeque cooked by Deepika who is Harolds wife and beer for £7 per head.
