Which hotel suitable for family wth teenagers and youngsters

After much research on whether or not to go to Thailand, we have now decided on Sir Lanka. We only have 7 days and want a beach/shopping holiday. Probably wont do any long trips as we have a baby but would like a decent hotel with family facilities. Would like to get the train into Colombo or rent a mini bus as there will be 11 of us!

Would like a hotel with somewhere to walk to not just stuck in the hotel grounds. Have been to Goa and wont be bothered by the hawkers.

Good food in the hotel is a must as we will prob go half board and comfort, although dont want to pay an absolute fortune. Somewhere with family rooms and satellite or cable tv. (not asking for much are we)

Any advice gratefully received

Hmmm... siding with at least Rod I would disagree on the train with last poster.

For any group with kids above 8, I would have NO problem recommending the Negombo-Colombo train. It%26#39;s relatively frequent, if you%26#39;re lucky you have an express one (60 mins) but most are local ones (90+ minutes), but quite feasible. Comfort: indeed not much but who needs that for a 90 min ride? Safety - well as said not trustable for smaller kids as all doors are open and the ride can be shaky, but sure no problem for most people!

All the best,

Hi,

You anticipated me there Erik.

I love travelling by trains and certainly don%26#39;t class then as dangerous.

I agree with the point about the doors being open so a group of youngsters mught not be suitable but in general train travel is great.

Always something going on, the wadiwadimen going up and down the train selling their wares, the buskers, some pretty average but some very good ones and on most routes it%26#39;s the best way to see the scenery and the countryside.

As Erik said, on that route, the likely hood is you%26#39;d be catching a commuter train so a bit slow, but , hey, it%26#39;s a holiday, who,s in a hurry.

Rod.

thanks for all your advice but one more thing. We are trying to book on numerous web sites and you cant seem to put in family rooms - it just says Dble or triple. Triple seems to put the prices up considerably. If we book two doubles do you think they will put an extra bed for a child on arrival, dont mind to pay a bit extra. We will need 4 rooms in all as there are 10 of us. We are thinking of Browns beach. Does anyone know if we can book directly with hotel or a good web site to book through.

Thanks

BMaz

Hi Bmaz

Just to comment on your last comment only here, Sri Lankan hotels ';usually'; do not charge for accomodation for kids under 12 years old, only for meals, so asking for a 3rd bed in a room shared with 2 adults should not cost you anything except for as i said meals.

Dave

Thanks for all the info - does anyone know the differnce between a beach room or cabana and which would be more suitable for our large family

Hmmm

Cabanas are usally away from the main buliding of a hotel and virtually on the beaches, not sure about what beach room would mean at Browns.

If you have problems in booking at Browns , mail me at davidjstockwell@btinternet.com and i will let you have the e-mail address for the sales %26amp; marketing manager at AitkenSpence Hotels owners of Browns Beach, he will help you out, and ';could'; even be a little cheaper too?

Regards

Dave
