Road noise - beaches in the south + Villa Samsara

Hi all, we are planning a beach holiday in the south-southwest in late february. I know the A2 is right next to most of the beaches (with the exception of most of unawatuna perhaps?) and one thing I hate is road noise on a beach holiday!

So, my questions are:

1. Which beaches are the quietest as far as road noise is concerned? Tangalle, unawatuna, hikkaduwa, etc?

2. Has anyone stayed at Villa Samsara near Weligama? It looks lovely but I read that there was considerable road noise.

3. Road noise at Palm Paradise Cabanas in tangalle? It looks lovely.

4. Road noise at Thaproban in unawatuna?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Hikkaduwa has no peninsula-like places away from Galle Road. Unawatuna and Tangalle do have these; Tangalle part of the town/beach area and U%26#39;tuna 80% of it. So depending on the exact location of the accomodation, these two offer the best chances....

Can%26#39;t comment on 2-4 as we%26#39;ve not stayed there.

All the best,

Thanks Erik!

hi,

Mirissa beach is somewhat away from the Galle Road and you will enjoy a calm environment.

But remember beaches is not only the option available in Sri Lanka. There are much more if you really like to explore Sri Lanka especially if you like Nature %26amp; tranquility.

Thanks...I think what we%26#39;ll do is just show up on friday morning and take a look at a few different hotels we have in mind in the unawatuna area...am dreading getting locked into a place for 3 nights and discovering its not what we%26#39;re looking for.

Am assuming occupancy will not be 100% the weekend of february 20 as its mid season and the political situation is getting a lot of media coverage abroad.

Is this a feasible plan?

Thanks...

Hi,

I very , very rarely pre-book anywhere in Lanka and I%26#39;ve never been found without anywhere to sleep yet.

As long as it%26#39;s a place like Unawatuna, Mirissa or Hikkaduwa you%26#39;re looking at , where there%26#39;s plenty of alternatives then you%26#39;d be fine. If it was literally a one guest house town, then you don%26#39;t have any bargaining power.

Nishantha mentioned Mirissa as being no noise.. One end is, thats the western end of the beach but getting towards the eastrn end, you cam stand on the main coast road and jump onto the beach. Plenty of places to stay there that are quiet, just not the eastern end.

Rod.

Much appreciated, Rob.

Though most of Unawatuna is off the main road the beach is very narrow unless you%26#39;re at the road end where of course there is constant noise. Mirissa is a far better option for both beach and noise. It is only 20 minutes further on from Unawatuna (just past Welligama which doesn%26#39;t have such a great beach either) and has far more appeal and character. The Western end is down a road to Paradise beach resort and there are several guesthouses on the road and on the beach, all very quiet. The eastern end has one place Sunset Guesthouse which is right on the road but also right on the beach and has limited road noise because of the sound of the sea - it also has hot water. There are also 6 guesthouse mid beach which run from the road to the beach but the owners live on the roadside so the rooms do not get traffic noise. Things are pretty quiet there this year and you will have no trouble getting a room without booking.
