Dear Forum
I am thinking of buying a mobile phone in Sri Lanka when I get there and using a local sim card . Please does anyone know how much the cheapest mobile phones are in Sri Lanka. Perhaps one can buy one cheaper there than in the UK.
Thanks
Ian
mobile phones
Hi there...
Yep, some mobiles VERY cheap in Lanka, BUT, if your own one is umlocked to any network, then no need to buy there at all.
Just pop along to a Dialog shop, (the best for overall coverage) once arrived and they will sort you out, a Dialog shop is in arrivals hall just after the banking desks there.
Back to original question, a cheap mobile can be had for around 4000 to 6000 Rupees (20 to 30 pound) , ok it doesn%26#39;t have camera and things like that but ok anyway.
Other more sosphiticated models available , and yes cheaper than UK prices.
Hope this helps

Dave

Hi,
I unlocked my wifes old mobile using a site I found from a google search. They gave full instructions and the codes to unlock.
I Lanka, we just bought a local simcard and dropped it in . No problems.
She now just keeps that old phone for Sri Lanka.
Rod.
Hi
The cheapest new mobiles for quite a while has been Nokia 1200 (LKR 4000) and Nokia 1208 (LKR 4500).
Second hand can be found for about LKR 3000.

Dear Sir and madam
Thank you for your kind postings
I take good note of the information you kindly provide
Please can I ask for clarification though
In your reference to ';Dialogue'; shops did you mean to use these to unlock the phone or to buy phone
What is meant by dialogue shop is it a brand of shop and are there many dialog shops in colombo or rest of SL please
Thank you so much
Ian
Hi again,
See www.dialog.lk. It%26#39;s one of the telco companies in Lanka, and has its own shops but also many resellers.
All the best,

Got a brand new phone last week, for a visiting friend who%26#39;s own phone was locked, in local phone shop in Tangalle - Rs3,500 inc Rs200 credit! Far cheaper than UK!
Hi All
Thanks so much for the info about phones and dialog shops
Yours
Ian
