Kandy , Eliya and Ella

Dear Erik,

Given that I have about 3 days in Kandy before I head to Colombo, I%26#39;d like to get some information on how to maximise my trip

I can spend the first day touring Kandy ( the elephant orpanage, temple etc)

question : Where do they have the dance performance??

I would like to spend the next two days going to Eliya and Ella?

What are your recommendations to get there?

Can it just be a day trip or do you suggest spending a night there?

If yes, Would you please suggest some places to stay and what it would cost ( nothing too fancy)

Can you help please?

Many thanks.

HI,

starting with the Kandian cultural show.

The Temple stands beside the lake. So from the temple walk along the lake side going away from the town centre. Or, imagine walking out of the temple grounds to the lake sde, turn left. Walk about 150 metres. On the left you%26#39;ll see a building like a theatre with stone/concrete steps leading up to the door.

Thats where the show is held every evening. I%26#39;ve always remembered it as starting at 6 PM but someone said on here a while ago said it was 5;30 pm. I still think it starts at 6 but check it out or get there a bit early.

Newara Eliya or Ella.

I don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s anything in Newara Eliya to attract most visitors so I%26#39;d say Ella.

Way to get there,,, go on the train. The train may leave from Kandy station or from Peradeniya so check that out when you%26#39;re in Kandy. A tuk tuk will take you to either station.

Places to stay..

I don%26#39;t think you can d better than the

Tea Garden Holiday Inn, Ela.

From the station. you can get a tuk tuk from the station but don%26#39;t let them tell you that the guest house is burned down or the owner has died or that there%26#39;s plague in that area.

Tuk tuk drivers will tell you something like that in most places so they can take you to a place where they get commission.

It%26#39;s standing and in excellent condition.

Or,

you can walk fm the station.

out of the doorway from the platform, turn right dow station approach, at the main village street, turn left. Walk down the slope to where the road curves right at the bottom of the village.

Just around that corner, the Tea Garden is set up above the road on the right.

Ask for a top room.

Right at the top, there are two rooms with a huge 270 degree wrap around balcony with fantastic views. To the right is Ella Rock, ( a mountain ), to the left is Little Adams Peak ( another moutain )and straight ahead, the view down through Ella Gap.

I%26#39;d make it an over night stop as the train ride is 5 1/2 to 6 hours from Kandy.

If you wanted to, check the train times with the guest house but you could make time to walk to the top of Litle Adams peak either that afternoon or in the morning, depending on the return train times.

Can be walked easily in about 2 1/2 to 3 hours but best to allow more time than that to savour the views.

Thank you so much

The tea gardens are situated here right?

I agree with Rod ... the Tea Garden guesthouse at Ella is a wonderful choice and is the nicest place I have stayed at in the area. We had a night there just a couple of weeks back. The views and rooms are superb, it is a really friendly place and the chef is THE BEST! He invited us into the kitchen to watch him prepare our evening meal and I have to say, I have never had a more delicious feast ...

Send me a pm with your e-mail address if you want me to send you a few pics ..

.. to add, a double room here cost something like Rs2500 B %26amp; B for 2.

Sue
