I am not clear what you mean a bigger town. Anyway Mermaid is situated in between Wadduwa and Kalutara North. So you have to come to either wadduwa or Kalutara north to catch a train. If you are traveling towards Galle better to go to Kautara Siuth station because all the express trains stops there.

The nearest town is kalutara from the mermaid hotel. A bus or tuk tuk is the easiest way.

Shops

Yep, Kalutara has a HUGE temple near the river. One of the landmarks of the west coast. Access _free_, avoid all the touts offering you a costly tour to the inside.

Also the usual set of shops including even some westernised supermarkets like Cargill%26#39;s and Keells. Not that many touristy/clothes shops though; these you find closer to the hotels and at Galle Road in Kalutara North.

There is also a nice small temple in Kalutara North called Ashokaramaya - no crowds, very quiet - sorta close to the Kalutara North Police Station.
