Yep, Beruwala (about 10 km to the south) has some decent reefs. Not certain whether they are adjacent to the coast or need a boat transfer to reach them, though.

Places with reefs adjacent to the beach are further away: Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Polhena-Mirissa.

From Mermaid Hotel to the beaches at Beruwala (Moragalla) is more than 20 km and some distance away from the main road, and really not much fun for snorkeling.

Better go to Hikkaduwa or even further south.
