Has Sri Lanka changed since I last visited?

Hi

We first went to Sri Lanka in 1996 and a further 5 times after that (staying in various hotels in Negombo), our last visit was in Jan 2004.

We%26#39;ve been to Goa for the last few years, but for a number of reasons, I don%26#39;t have time to get a visa - I%26#39;m looking at a fairly last minute deal.

I%26#39;ve searched on the web and I THINK that visas for British citizens are granted on arrival (for up to 30 day stays).

Our passports have at least 6 months left.

Can anyone confirm this from recent experiecne please.

For anybody who%26#39;s been to Negombo during the period we did and have more recent experiences too - what sort of changes should we expect.

Thanks

Hi there,

No change. Still on-arrival visa, we got one last month too.

Generally: not many visible changes for tourists. Lots of security around Colombo and airport, and bigger poverty due to rising prices. But for tourists generally still a good bargain...

All the best,

Hi prettypollycat, We have been several times with November being the latest. We have found price rises as well as the exchange rate down to around 160rp/1拢 so that is the main difference. Last year we got 236rs. Secondly it seems to have got worse with rubbish tipping. We also do like Goa and thinking of going south this year as there rs seems to be the same as the last time we went.

Hi,

Unlike bladesboy, I reckon the rubbish situation has got a lot better in Negombo.

Til a couple of years ago, the area around the guest houses / hotels/ Lewis Place etc , had piles of rubbish in the street, usally with a herd of goats grazing on it, there used to be cows strolling along the road there, The drainage system had slabs missing about every ten feet , so walking in the dark was a danger and any building materials were just tipped in the street so you were constantly walking or driving over heaps of shingle, sand or just rubble..

There are now regular rubbish collections, albeit not very efficient, the cows don%26#39;t seem to wander along there anymore. The goats occasionally but not so often, most ofthe big slabs over the drains have been fitted and it%26#39;s just generally cleaner and tidier.

Prices have risen , due to inflation and the exchange rate.

Visa and passport requirements are still the same. 6 months remaining on passpot and 30 days visa issued automatically on arrival.

Rod.
