My wife and I will be staying at Club Palm Bay Marawilla from 21 Jan. onwards for 3 weeks. We want to visit a wild life park to see both animals and birds so would welcome any info.on where to go locally, for how long(1 or 2days),and the approx. costs including entrance fees? Also any info. please on local fishing and bait required.

Wild Life Parks

Hi there,

Can%26#39;t help with the fishing...

As for wildlife, it%26#39;s a 2-step approach.

1] Inquire locally whether Wilpattu park (about 2 hours from Marawila) is reopened. If so, that%26#39;s by far the easiest, and reachable for a day trip. Upto fall 2008 it was closed due to %26#39;human tigers%26#39; but the war front has moved very quickly over the last 4-6 months so chance it is open then.

2] If not yet open, it will be Minneriya or Kaudulla park, both near Habarana. A 2-day trip. It%26#39;s around 4 hours drive and the safaris are dusk and dawn, hence better to be near.

Entrance fees (including the compulsory tracker) and jeep hire for a party of two in all parks are together around USD 50. Ride to Wilpattu would be around Rs 6,000 both ways. Ride to Minneriya and overnight stay (BB basis, double room in guesthouse) would be at least double that amount.

Hope this helps a bit,

Wild Life Parks

Hi,

Wilpattu is not yet opened as far as i know. The closest park to see elephants etc. is Minneriya which is about 3 hours from Marawila. These parks are famous mostly for elepahnts. If you wish to select a park which has more species of animals the closest park then is Udawalawe. Most of the bird watchers select Sinharaja rain forest because it is the most famous places tio most number of endemic birds including Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, White faced starling, spot winged thrush, scaly thrush, yellow fronted barbet, red faced malkoha and much more.
