Best beaches

Which beach/es in the SouthWest would you recommend?

We%26#39;d like somewhere with a local village with shops etc to walk to, not too over-run with touts and relatively picturesque. We%26#39;d be there in April, so sea that%26#39;s OK to swim in then, would be good.

Thanks!

Best beaches

Hi,

Unfortunately most beaches with any kind of accommodation for tourist attract beach boys and hawkers. It%26#39;s their way of supporting their families.

All the way from Beruwala to Tangalle you have mostly wide and sandy beaches fringed with coconut palms. Most of April the sea is OK for swimming all the way, but e.g. Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna have protecting coral reefs. Personally I find Hikkaduwa too noisy as most hotels have the main road from Colombo to Galle running just outside the hotel.

Best beaches

Hi,

Where to go would depend a lot on what type of accomodation you%26#39;d be looking for.

There are beautiful looking beaches all down the southern part of the west coast and along the south coast, but not all good for swimming due to ocean currents.

Hikkaduwa is an obvious place that had a small town centre with all the local shops as well as plenty of tourist gift shops. Swimming all year inside the reef.

Unawatuna is similar but the beach is much narrower and not so many shops.

Mirissa beach is probably the best of the three beaches, village atmosphere but not many shops although a trip into Matara or Galle is easy with train, bus or tuk tuk.

Rod.

Definitely Mirissa, no touts at all and the beach is stunning. Sea is great to swim in at that time too. The village is small but you also get the chance to know a few of the locals and Welligama is only 10 mins by tuktuk, Matara about 20 mins. Local buses also go through all the time I was there last April and will probably be back again this April.

No need to book acomodation in advance, you%26#39;ll be able to take your pick at that time.
