Ferry to Sri Lanka

Hi there,

If you%26#39;d searched the forum you%26#39;d have found the simple answer: NO. Impossible for the last 15-20 years due to security; the objections for the last 7 years were more from the Indian than from the Lankan side.

Cheap flights to Chennai or Trivandrum or Bangalore can be found for something like 50-100 USD one-way.

All the best,

I did hear tell,

of a hang gliding course you could take on the Indian side but you need to reach a high level of expertise before trying to hang glide across the Palk Straights.

Hi,

The ferry services were suspended in 1984 as a result of the conflict between Government of Sri Lanka and LTTE.

Since 2000 there have several attempts to reopen a ferry service between India and Sri Lanka, but all have been shelved due to security concern from India.

The only way to enter Sri Lanka from the outside world is by air to Colombo Airport.

SriLankan Airlines http://www.srilankan.aero/ serves Colombo from 11 cities in India, but flights are usually more expensive than flights on Indian budget airlines. Flights from Chennai are usually the cheapest on e.g. JetLite, Kingfisher and Air India Express. Book early to get the cheapest prices as the load factor on flights from South India to Colombo is usually high.

A good site for finding (and booking) flights from India is: http://www.cleartrip.com/flights
